NEWS HIT: Fine time

April 24, 2008

With the May 1 deadline for taxicabs to switch from zones to meters approaching, a District of Columbia court ruled on Monday against cab drivers who challenged the legality of the switch.

Mayor Adrian Fenty announced the mandatory switch last October but few cabs have made the change. In the lawsuit, the cab drivers argued that Fenty had exceeded his authority in requiring the switch, a charge that the judge dismissed. In a press release issued Tuesday, Fenty vowed to enforce the deadline, as well as the $1000 fine for non-compliance.

“The mayor’s main concern is to listen to the residents, who want the most reliable system,” Fenty spokesperson Leslie Kershaw said. “We want to enforce the deadlines and make sure the taxi drivers are in compliance.”
