The old adage says the harder you work, the luckier you get. If that is true, freshmen swimmer Victor Lopez-Cantera is very, very lucky. Lopez-Cantera swam his way past the competition for victories in the 100 and 200 meter butterfly in this past Saturday’s dual meet against St. Bonaventure University.
Lopez-Cantera was one of the Hoyas’ only bright spots in their 183-114 loss.
But his success doesn’t surprise anyone. The freshman has proven himself to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest, worker on the team. But more importantly, his attitude backs up his talent.
“The best thing about Vic is that he hates to lose,” coach Steven Cartwright said. “When you have that mentality, no matter what sport you play, you’re going to be good.”
For Lopez-Cantera, good is not enough—he’s thinking a little bit bigger. One of his goals is to place in the Big East Tournament later this season. With a little luck and an eye to the future, he just might make some waves.
