Three George Washington University graduate students have started a campaign to enact a campus-wide smoking ban.
Lindsay King, Chris Carrier, and Babak Yaghmaei, students at the School of Public Health and Health Services, created the student group, Campus for Clean Air. Although GWU already prohibits smoking indoors and near building entrances, the three say that the University’s policy is not enough.
“Each of us have different personal reasons for being passionate about this project, but we all agree that smoking in any public setting has a negative health impact,” King wrote in an e-mail.
The students have accumulated over 500 signatures on their petition already and have received letters of support from D.C. Councilmembers, according to King.
“GW is evaluating the feasibility of an outdoor smoking ban,” GWU Director of Media Relations Tracy Schario wrote in an e-mail. “However, given that most outdoor space is public space, it would likely be difficult to enforce.”
Can we please have this happen at G-town?!
