The campus community was treated to some pleasant news on Wednesday: Greg “The Doctrine” Monroe will be returning to Georgetown for his sophomore season.
Monroe announced his intentions on the same day the Hoyas lost yet another player—Omar Wattad, who has decided to transfer. Junior DaJuan Summers already declared for the NBA Draft. The Hoyas finished a disappointing 16-15 this season and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
Monroe’s return bodes well for the Hoyas, who look to return to the Tourney next season. He averaged 12.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists last season en route to winning the Big East Rookie of the Year award.
Monroe might be following in the footsteps of Blake Griffin. Griffin—who opted to return to Oklahoma for his sophomore season—increased his draft status from a lottery pick to the consensus overall first pick in this year’s draft.
Monroe is the perfect cog for head coach John Thompson III’s Princeton-style offense: he plays unselfishly, his vision is unparalleled for a big man, and he understands the game’s intricacies.
For Hoya fans, that’s nothing but good news.
Hello again.
I just wanted to congratulate Mr. Bosco on speaking with me today. Considering no other major news outlet was able to, that is no small feat.
You did speak to me, right? Because your article says that I announced my intentions. That’s funny, because I thought my coach told The Hoya and then the Post. Or maybe it was the other way around. But I don’t remember making an announcement.
Voice, am I wrong? Did we speak today, or is this story based upon The Hoya’s breaking piece earlier today?
