For college coaches, recruiting can be a stressful process. They spend hours each day poring over high school results and talking up potential recruits over the phone. Yet, every once in awhile, the hard work reaps huge rewards: a star freshman arrives and contributes immediately to the team’s success. For Georgetown swimming head coach Steven Cartwright, this has been one of those seasons, as his recruiting efforts resulted in a strong freshman class, headed by Samantha Kietlinski.
Last weekend, swimming at home in the Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Swimming Pool against a tough James Madison squad, Kietlinski swam her heart out, winning the 100 and 200 freestyle and taking second in the 200 individual medley. Her noteworthy performances helped the Hoya women stay close to James Madison, but the Dukes pulled away at the end. In the process, however, Kietlinski garnered three Georgetown top-ten times. She was elated with how well she swam, especially since it was her first collegiate dual meet.
“I went in with no expectations,” Kietlinski said. “[Cartwright] told me the other girls’ times, and I knew I would have to go out there and start out fast and give it my all. I was very surprised. I was very happy.”
Cartwright, though, knew all along that Kietlinski was a special swimmer.
“Every freshman brings a very unique personality to the team,” Cartwright said. “[Kietlinski], like most freshmen, brings a lot of character to the team. Sam is a very versatile athlete. She can go in multiple events during the dual meet season. Hopefully, we can narrow down three events for her to try to score top eight in the Big East.”
After a fast start to the season, Kietlinski, like Cartwright, is also looking forward to the rest of the season, as she plans to build on her first dual meet performance.
“I want to continue swimming well in dual meets and keep swimming fast times,” Kietlinski said. “I hope to perform really well at Big East.”
