GUSA and the Office of Residential Living (ORL) released a survey on student housing needs in an effort to evaluate the need to reevaluate the university’s laundry system. According to the Senate Subcommittee on Residential Living, depending on the results of the survey, ORL may change the laundry system to give students unlimited swipes for a year.
According to Chair of the Subcommittee, Daniel Lysak (COL ’18), student opinion is divided on the issue of laundry.
“We asked students, ‘If given the option, would you prefer pay-as-you-go or a pre-paid laundry system where students pay a one-time fee at the beginning of the year?’ Thus far, 545 students stated they would prefer a pre-paid system, while 597 students stated they would prefer a pay-as-you-go system,” he wrote in an email to The Voice.
Lysak notes that the pre-paid system would be an option for students, but not a requirement. He expresses optimism about the prospect of a pre-paid laundry system as the Senate works with the ORL.
“As a whole, the administrators to whom we have spoken have showed that they are certainly going to consider adding the option of a pre-paid system. In fact, one such administrator stated that he had already been working on proposing a similar idea on his own,” Lysak wrote.
As members of the Senate Subcommittee on Residential Living meet with the ORL this week, staff members in the office show willingness to discuss change. According to Patrick Killilee, the executive director of student housing, several other universities offer laundry services as a component of student room and board.
“At the this we are in the exploration stage,” Killilee wrote in an email to The Voice. “This stage is about gathering information to put forth a proposal. If we were to move forward with that idea, it would not be for the 2015-16 academic year.”
