UVA upsets Hoyas

After breaking an eight game Big East losing streak on Sunday against Cincinnati, the Georgetown baseball team faced off against non-conference opponent University of Virginia on Tuesday evening. The Hoyas fell 9-1 against the 16th ranked Cavaliers.

Sports Sermon

This Friday the Multi-Sport Field will be transformed into what might appear to be a campground. Blue-topped tents and tarps will line the field, a stage will be constructed on the south end and banners will hang from every inch of the field’s walls. From 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday morning almost 2,000 students will spend their night on the field participating in a gigantic relay.

When I mention the words “workout” and “girls” what comes to mind? Perhaps the rows of occupied elliptical machines at Yates steadily spinning away while the girls on them read the lastest issue of Cosmo? An exercise ball might even be involved, but what remains consistent in any image is the intent to break the least amount of sweat while still managing to get the body in shape.

The Georgetown women’s basketball team has been on the rise in recent years due to Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy—who joined the Hoyas for the 2004-2005 season—and her attempt to turn the program around. This year alone, the Hoyas managed to improve their overall record to 15-14 (5-11 Big East). The team finished the season ranked 13th in their conference, which placed them only one spot away from making a showing at the Big East Tournament.

The Georgetown’s men’s basketball team is currently ranked eighth in national polls and holds the top spot in the Big East, the league judged by many as the fiercest in college basketball. In postseason projections, the Hoyas are seen as contenders for in the final rounds. These facts warrant respect, but some have argued that Georgetown’s recent games have not mirrored the play expected of a team of their status.
