Houghton leads Hoyas into the fray

Charlie Houghton is a complicated guy. One of those soft-spoken, deep-thinking types who doesn’t say much. Carefully crafting every thought and phrase, he’s even-keeled, setting his own pace. His feet, on the other hand, are usually moving much faster than his mouth.

Stick Around

We’re excited to hear that, even after declaring for the NBA Draft, Jeff and Roy are considering a hero’s homecoming for their senior season. Die-hard basketball fans have to admit: our hearts are aflutter. Until they make their final decision, we’ll be going to sleep with dreams of back-door cuts, put-back slams and buzzer beaters dancing in our heads. Wouldn’t a championship banner be a nice little memento for the big men to leave behind? The thing is, we’re emotionally involved here. We’ve seen them grow from dread-locked and awkward to awe-inspiring and intimidating.

Mo’ Madness

All right, admit it. There was a point in this magical mystery ride of a basketball season when you thought your heralded Hoyas might not even make the NCAA Tournament. After losses to Oregon and Old Dominion, those who bled blue and gray were feeling blue and sporting some grayish facial hue wondering if the Sports Illustrated jinx had struck again. At that time, the Hoyas were about as likely to make a tourney run as Britney Spears is likely to do a shampoo ad any time in the near future.

Trash Talking

This goes out to all you Hoya fans who can’t stand that classic fight song of ours. Sure, you’ll take your love of Blue and Gray to the grave, but that age-old tune just doesn’t have the sauce to get you pumped during the last two minutes of a Big East basketball game.

Ex-Patriot Fan

Every year, the lead-up to the Super Bowl gets overblown by every analyst and sports station in the country. Interviews, highlights, and stats abound, encroaching on the life of every good American sports fan. The inundation is relentless right up through the final sideline reports thirty seconds prior to a great flashing of cameras, during which a kickoff is rumored to take place.

Hoya football future looks bright

As the Georgetown football team came out of halftime last Saturday against Lafayette, Charlie Houghton cut across the middle of the field on a short slant pattern, looked Matt Bassuaner’s pass into his hands and darted down the field eluding Leopard defenders along the way for an 84-yard touchdown reception. For this Canadian-born ball carrier, it was no sweat.

FAST BREAK: Georgetown downs Commodores 86-70

As Vanderbilt guard Alex Gordon hit a running jumper with time expiring in the first half, the lead that Georgetown’s men’s basketball team had once stacked to 12 points dwindled to just four. However, the Hoyas survived foul trouble and missing junior guard Tyler Crawford to defeat Vanderbilt 86-70 and avenge their loss to the Commodores at home last year.

100 years, 98 seasons

I’m not trying to be Dikembe Downer here. Really, I’m not. I’m just as excited as the next Hoya for this year’s basketball season. What I don’t get is why everyone is rushing into the whole 100 YEARS OF BASKETBALL AT GEORGETOWN hoopla.
