For a group of seniors that seemed like they couldn’t catch a break all season, they sure picked a good time to reverse their fortune. For the second straight year, Georgetown’s football team rallied in the final minutes to secure a victory on Homecoming.

The last time the Georgetown Hoyas were a consensus top 10 ranked preseason team was in the fall of 1995 when they were ranked fifth and led by a skinny sophomore named Allen Iverson. Since then, a lot has changed. That skinny sophomore became one of the NBA’s greatest-ever scoring guards with a distaste for practice, and somehow Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson went from being elite actors to just plain acting insane.
So, as only The Voice can do, we’ll try and recall some of those pop-culture memories from 1995 that can make us appreciate just how long it has been since the basketball program has been this highly regarded in the preseason top 25. Here’s The Voice’s version of the poll.

Homecoming is the time of year when alumni reconvene to catch up on old times and reminisce about the things that defined their time on the Hilltop. Georgetown’s football team hasn’t provided many of these joyous memories during the course of this season, but they’ll hope to change that as they face Marist this Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Yard.

I’m now a devoted fan of a new league. It’s a league where the players aren’t paid a cent. They have no agents, no crooked boosters and no endorsement deals. They play because they want to. They have no families to feed and no draft status to worry about. Their biggest concern is scraping a knee, or worse yet, ripping their game-day Dockers.

Much like Bill Murray’s character in Groundhog Day, the Georgetown football team (1-6, 0-4) is having a recurring bad dream. The Hoyas were once again stricken by key turnovers and an anemic offense in their 17-7 loss to the Bucknell Bison.

The feeling in the Georgetown locker room after their 28-3 loss to Lehigh was much different than after their last home game four weeks earlier. Then, the Hoyas celebrated their first victory under new Head Coach Kevin Kelly and were poised to make a hopefully successful three-game road trip. Now, they find themselves in the middle of a four-game losing streak after the Mountain Hawks spoiled their return home to the Yard.

If the Hoyas weren’t a little homesick after their 0-2 start to a three-game road trip, their 31-14 loss to Colgate (2-2, 1-0 PL) last Saturday had the boys in Blue and Gray feeling green.

Last Saturday when Georgetown’s football team squared off against Columbia for their second straight Ivy League bout, they were greeted with a decidedly snobby 20-0 run that proved to be too much for the fighting Hoyas to overcome.

I’ve been spoiled. For the last three years my Boston Red Sox have made the playoffs.

If you don’t score, you can’t win. Last Saturday afternoon in the heart of the Hilltop, Georgetown’s young defense took this simple rule to heart.
