Damn Yanks

Two hundred dollars million just doesn’t go as far as it used to. Despite a phenomenal start from Alex Rodriguez, the rest of the New York Yankees have failed to pick up the slack, resulting in the team’s longest losing streak in two years. Twenty games into the season, the best baseball squad that money can buy finds itself in last place in the American League East. Are the New York Yankees becoming the Washington Redskins of Major League Baseball?

Ultimate: a good huckin’ time

“This wind is extreeeeeeme!” a men’s club Ultimate Frisbee player shouted as he jogged onto Kehoe a few minutes late for practice. It was a remarkably windy day, but his teammates had decided to continue their workout in preparation for upcoming tournament play.

Stick Around

We’re excited to hear that, even after declaring for the NBA Draft, Jeff and Roy are considering a hero’s homecoming for their senior season. Die-hard basketball fans have to admit: our hearts are aflutter. Until they make their final decision, we’ll be going to sleep with dreams of back-door cuts, put-back slams and buzzer beaters dancing in our heads. Wouldn’t a championship banner be a nice little memento for the big men to leave behind? The thing is, we’re emotionally involved here. We’ve seen them grow from dread-locked and awkward to awe-inspiring and intimidating.

Hoyas’ losing streak continues

The Georgetown women’s softball team continued their losing ways Wednesday night, dropping both games of a double-header against George Mason.

Sports Sermon

When NBA commissioner David Stern suspended veteran referee Joey Crawford indefinitely on Tuesday, he made a necessary statement to fans, players and other officials that referees do not control the outcome of NBA games.

Lights shine on Hoya baseball

It’s a difficult task to find a taxi willing to take you all the way to Rockville for Hoya home games, but those who made the trip saw Georgetown successfully defend its home turf in the first-ever night game at Shirley Povich Field.

Rugby club’s brotherly scrum

It’s the closest thing Georgetown has to a fraternity.

Sports Sermon

In 1983, ABC sports commentator Howard Cosell shocked the country during a Monday Night Football telecast when he referred to an African American player as a “little monkey.” Cosell had used the phrase before to refer to both white and black players who were smaller and quicker than others, but the backlash from this particular broadcast caused Cosell to resign from his position. Nearly a quarter-century later, controversial sports commentary has once again hit the news. But this most recent comment, made by radio personality Don Imus, has a much clearer intention than Cosell’s slip-up.

Baseball road woes continues

After dropping a three-game set to Big East opponent Seton Hall, Georgetown baseball (12-21) suffered another setback against George Mason on Wednesday. This loss marked the Hoyas second defeat to the Patriots in just five games. Since the April 3 loss to George Mason, Georgetown has dropped five straight while being outscored by opponents 31-15.

Hoyas dominate Mt. St. Mary’s

The fifth-ranked Georgetown Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Maryland and defeated Mount St. Mary’s 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Pay the man

Some have forgotten, others weren’t even here. But, as a senior, I remember all too well the humiliating loss to Duke and the last second heart-breaker against Syracuse during my freshman year.

Campin out to get to HotLanta

Phillip McClymont was as giddy as a plastic surgeon at the Playboy mansion as he sat in full collegiate glory Monday night outside McDonough Gymnasium, surveying the crowd of fellow Hoyas who came to secure tickets to the culmination of March’s madness: the Final Four in Atlanta. Reclining in a camping chair as buddies popped open brews and enjoyed the gustatory delights of finely-aged Philly Pizza, the junior’s glow outshone even Patrick Ewing’s dog-tag bling.

Power trio

I remember about two and a half years ago standing on Harbin Field for our Class of 2008 picture during Freshman Orientation and seeing Jon Wallace, Roy Hibbert and Jeff Green standing there. They were the freshman basketball stars, one from Alabama and two local talents. I had never heard of any of them.

Lady Hoyas take third straight

Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse battled for their third straight road-win Tuesday evening. The 9th-ranked Hoyas (first in BE) defeated the College of William and Mary 13-5, improving their record against the Tribe to 11-1.

Baseball takes step back

After Georgetown Baseball was swept in a disappointing Big East opening series versus Rutgers, the team rebounded Tuesday, edging rival George Washington 5-4 at home. The win avenged a 17-9 blowout loss earlier in the season and had all the signs of being a major boost for the team, but Georgetown faced a setback the next day, falling to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 9-2.

Sports Sermon

Throughout this storybook basketball season, Georgetown has shown again and again the importance of team effort. The patient Princeton offense outlasted the lightning-fast transition game of UNC. As the Hoyas prepare to take on Ohio State in Saturday’s semi-final, however, they will face a new challenge in a team whose parts are very similar to their own.

A new voice in college rankings

Imagine if college students across the nation had the ability to decide your college team’s position in the ranks each week. This became possible last week when two students launched www.studentwriterpoll.com, a ranking system similar to the AP writers’ and Coaches’ polls, that will survey college students to determine NCAA rankings.

Interference

Basketball, basketball, basketball. An entire month, dedicated to a single sport? Against all odds, I managed to find a non-basketball story of more than minor interest when I came across a few comments made by 49ers coach Mike Nolan on what has always been a pet peeve of mine: the NFL’s pass interference rule.

Sports

Disappointing opener for Hoyas

The Lady Hoyas had a disappointing home opener against James Madison yesterday afternoon, dropping both games of their doubleheader, 7-1 and 8-0. Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the very first game at Guy Mason Field, the new home of Georgetown softball.

Freshmen Dominate

Georgetown baseball, riding a thrilling 3-2 extra-inning victory in this weekend’s game against the University of Pennsylvania, headed home on Wednesday to battle Mount St. Mary’s. The Hoya’s young pitching staff flexed their muscles once again, leading Georgetown to a hard-fought 3-1 win.
