Hoyas fall in Camelot, hills

After a week in which the Hoyas broke two close games open in the second half-eventually beating both No. 19 Virginia Tech and St. John’s by wide margins- Georgetown’s Women’s Basketball team was not able to continue the trend Sunday. The Hoyas lost a nail-biter to Big East nemesis Rutgers University, despite Rebekkah Brunson’s record-setting performance.

But this year is different. Both the Patriots and Panthers are team-oriented and use consistently intricate but simple game plans to diffuse powerful opposing offenses.

Oh, Courtland! Senior slams Johnnies

SPORTS BY CAMERON SMITH Of all the things said by Coach Craig Esherick in his nine minute press conference following the Georgetown’s stirring last second victory over St. John’s on Tuesday night, perhaps the most important was, “Guys made plays.” A comment conspicuously absent from the past two Hoyas squads, the claim was echoed by what Esherick called, ” the best performance of his career,” from senior forward Courtland Freeman.

Over the course of the past season, Head Football Coach Bob Benson was forced to deal with a number of difficult on field challenges from many of Division I-AA’s top teams during a daunting schedule. Georgetown enjoyed another stellar week of Women’s Basketball, as the team took No. 21 Miami into double overtime on Jan. 14th, then overwhelmed No. 19 Virginia Tech at home on Jan. 17th, giving ever-emotional Coach Knapp his first victory over a ranked opponent in seven seasons.

Philly Pathos

The Cheesesteaks at Pat’s have lost a bit of their flavor, the Italian hoagie’s at Wawa have lost their zesty appeal. Yuengling Lagers have lost their sweet, sweet taste. It’s a sad, sad time to be from Philadelphia.

What can I say. The biggest Philadelphia Eagles fan on the Georgetown campus is hurting, bigtime.

Ahhh, poor Philly!! Look guys, next year I’ll buy the stick ‘em for the wide outs if they’ll just hold on to the ball. James Thrash and Todd Pinkston dropped more balls than Cosby dropped babies in his career. Well, at least Philly has other teams. Well, come to think of it, Iverson’s been in and out of injury for the Sixers, the Flyers are slumping, and, well, Temple hasn’t been good in almost as long as Don Cheaney hasn’t had hair.

Yet when many star athletes announce their retirement, it’s like a Georgetown student saying they aren’t going to drink for a while after spring break because they need to recover … right.

Turnovers end disappointing season

SPORTS BY CAMERON SMITH The Georgetown football team completed a disappointing season in a game that was emblematic of the troubles they encountered throughout their games: a 45-16 conference loss at Bucknell.

By halftime, the Hoyas had fallen behind 24-3, and could not recover enough momentum or points to salvage much from the game.

Women hoops keep buzzer beaters going

Not to be outdone by the men’s one point road win against Penn State, the Georgetown Women’s basketball squad won a scrappy road game in similar style on Saturday in Durham NH. The Hoyas defeated the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 61-60 thanks to a basket by Rebekkah Brunson with only three seconds remaining in the game.

Lions, Tigers, Hornets, oh my!

SPORTS BY CAMERON SMITH The heart-attack Hoyas are at it again. In only the season’s second game, Georgetown waited until the last second, literally, to take a lead, and eventually prevailed 79-78 over the Penn State Nittany Lions at State College, Pa. The early season match up against the perennial Big Ten cellar dwellers highlighted the early season schedule, in which the team has clawed its way to a 5-0 record.

On Saturday, Sims ran hard, over, through, and by Davidson defenders en route to a school-record 268-yard rushing performance.
