Sports Information

The Georgetown women’s basketball team (9-8, 2-5 Big East) lost its third consecutive game Friday afternoon, falling to first-place St. John’s (14-3, 5-1 Big East) 65-60 in front of 733 fans at McDonough Arena.

Sports Information

Freshman guard Dionna White led the way for the Hoyas with 15 points, while sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako had 13 points. The Blue and Gray shot 33 percent from the floor and 63 percent from the free throw line, 12-of-19.

Senior guard Danaejah Grant paced the Red Storm with a game-high 17 points, while junior guard Aaliyah Lewis scored 15 points, and senior guard Aliyyah Handford added 14 points. Off the bench, junior forward Jade Walker had a game-high 10 rebounds to complement her eight points off the bench. The Red Storm shot 40 percent from the field overall and 65 percent from the free throw line, 17-of-26.

The Hoyas led only once, after a three-pointer from Dorothy Adomako in the opening minute, and attempted to fight their way back for the entirety of the game. Multiple times in the second half, the Blue and Gray cut the Red Storm lead to four or three points, but could not get over the hump.

White’s conventional three-point play cut the Red Storm lead to three points, 60-57, after her made free throw with 58 seconds remaining. But on the following St. John’s possession, Lewis grabbed the rebound from her own miss after the Hoyas forced a poor shot. The Johnnies made five of six free throws in the closing 24 seconds to seal the victory, their sixth in their last seven games.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, setting a fast pace. A back-and-forth second quarter saw St. John’s take a 35-26 lead into halftime. The Hoyas committed nine first-half turnovers, which the Red Storm converted into nine points.

The Hoyas opened the second half on a 7-2 run to cut the St. John’s lead to four points, 37-33, at the 6:49 mark. The Red Storm responded, however, by closing the period on a 12-3 run before White banked in a desperation heave from near the tip-off circle as the quarter expired.

Georgetown returns to action this action this Sunday afternoon to host Seton Hall (13-3, 3-2 Big East) for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2.
