The Department of Public Safety is exploring the possibility of permanently expanding last week’s “Safewalks” program, Director William Tucker said.

Safewalks began last weekend in response to campus security concerns brought on by the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Volunteers took turns escorting students to campus locations when the students did not feel safe.

“We need to see if [Safewalks] is warranted and if students are really interested,” Tucker said. “I would say it will take us about 30 days at the rate things are going.”

Tucker said DPS provided student volunteers with safety information, flashlights and vests.

Other than a prank phone call warning about an attack in Red Square, Georgetown has received no threats, Tucker said Tuesday.
