A new boat house for Georgetown’s crew team is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2003. Due to increased interest in crew, the team has outgrown the space that it currently rents from the Public Park Service.
The new boat house will include five storage bays for the boats on the ground floor, a 24-person rowing tank, exercise facilities and locker rooms, according to University Architect Alan Brangman. Muse Architects have already begun the design plans for the construction site on the Potomac River.
“The new boat house will have everything that the teams will need to train for when they’re not in the water,” Brangman said.
Brangman said that plans for a new boat house have been discussed for the past 20 years and are now possible because of a land exchange with local park services.
“The people who are organizing it have made great progress. The reality is here,” said Patricia Thomas, Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator.
According to Head Crew Coach Tony Johnson, the crew team plans to raise $15 million for the building’s construction costs and operational expenses. The team also plans to create an endowment for the building which will cost close to million, Johnson said. (www.sportslogohistory.com)
The crew team has already raised more than $9 million from alumni, parents and friends, Johnson said. The team plans to raise the rest of the money through mailings and phone calls.
Johnson said the crew program has been the largest sport on campus for about 15 years. The new boat house will improve storage and training facilities, allowing the team to further expand.
“We would like to have a bigger boat house because we can accommodate more when we have our own facility,” Johnson said.
