Men’s Soccer (9-9-1, 6-5 Big East)—Last Saturday, in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Championship Tournament, Notre Dame defeated Georgetown 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals. Although the Fighting Irish dominated the Hoyas, outshooting Georgetown 18-5, Georgetown senior goalkeeper Brian O’Hagan turned in a fantastic performance with nine saves.

Notre Dame’s lone goal occurred in the 11th minute from sophomore Chad Riley in his first goal of the year off an assist by first-year Jack Stewart when O’Hagan had come out of the net.

Women’s Basketball—The Georgetown Women’s Basketball team ended their exhibition season with a strong 93-66 victory over the visiting Perik Jumpers of the Netherlands Saturday. Georgetown sophomore Rebekkah Brunson shot 11 of 12 from the field and finished with 27 points and nine boards. Also, scoring in double figures for the Hoyas were senior point guards Leslie Walker, junior forward Nok Duany, sophomore forward Varda Tamoulianis and first-year guard Mary Lisicky.

Georgetown opens the regular season with a game this Friday, Nov. 16, at home against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Women’s Volleyball (17-8, 10-2 Big East)—This Saturday the Hoyas will take on Rutgers in the Big East Volleyball Championship at the University of Pittsburgh. If the Hoyas win, they will face the winner of the Notre Dame-Connecticut game in the title game on Sunday.

Earlier this week, the Hoyas defeated Virginia Tech 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 33-31) in their final Big East match of the year. Senior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina and junior outside hitter Lauren Warner led Georgetown offensively. Vtyurina had match-high 17 kills to go with nine digs, two assists and a block, while Warner had her ninth double-double of the season with match-high 14 digs and 10 kills.

Monday, at Senior Night, the Hoyas were defeated by Temple University by a 3-0 score (30-23, 30-17, 30-27). Vtyurina led the Hoyas again with her 10th double-double of the season. She posted a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs as well as two solo blocks, two assists and an ace on the evening. Even though Georgetown held a 7-3 advantage in team blocks, the Hoyas only hit .255 for the match, compared to Temple’s .366.

Women’s Soccer (9-7-1, 1-4-1 Big East)—The ECAC Women’s Soccer Selection Committee picked Georgetown as the No. 1 seed in the 2001 ECAC Division I Women’s Soccer Championship held this Saturday and Sunday at Columbia University. The teams joining the Hoyas are Fordham, Columbia and SUNY-Binghamton.

First-year midfielder Nicole DePalma, part of the first nationally ranked recruiting class in Georgetown history, was named to the Big East Conference All-Rookie Team. DePalma was tied for second on the team this year in scoring with four goals and two assists totaling 10 points. She started all 17 of the Hoyas’ games this season and scored the game-winner in Georgetown’s 3-2 double overtime win over American University.

Football (3-6, 0-5 Patriot League)—In a battle of winless Patriot League teams on Saturday, Lafayette College defeated the Georgetown 37-17 on Kehoe Field. Even though Georgetown senior quarterback Sean Peterson recorded 295 yards passing, two touchdowns and no interceptions, Lafayette held the Hoyas to -25 yards rushing while piling up 276 yards of their own. Also, Lafayette sacked Peterson seven times.

The Hoyas were unable to build upon their strong defensive game the previous week in the win against San Diego and gave up 484 yards of total offense to Lafayette. Still, senior middle linebacker Matthew Craffey played well and led Georgetown with eight tackles and sophomore defensive back Matt Fronczke added seven unassisted tackles.

Georgetown ends its season on Saturday, Nov. 17, with a home game against Towson.
