The Georgetown women’s basketball team defeated Pittsburgh last night 73-56 after losing to Syracuse last Saturday 89-61 and falling to No. 1-ranked University of Connecticut 85-41 earlier last week.

Despite the tough loss to UConn, the Hoyas came back to put up a fight against the Orangewomen. At the half, the Hoyas were only down 14, and two Georgetown players were already in double figures. Junior center Zsuzsanna Horvath scored 20 total in the game.

The Orangewomen had a 20-point lead with 18 minutes left in the game, and despite a 14-5 Georgetown run early in the second half, the Hoyas couldn’t catch up. The surge in scoring for the Orangewomen came predominantly from senior guard Jamie James who scored 20 of Syracuse’s final 23 points and totaled a career high 33 in the game.

Three Hoyas scored in double figures, including Horvath, first-year Mary Lisicky and junior Nok Duany, who had 15 and continued her streak of scoring in double figures, which now stands at 10. The Hoyas three-point shooting percentage was their downfall however, shooting only 33.3 percent from behind the arc while Syracuse sank 59.1 percent from three-point range. The Hoyas turned the ball over 21 times but rebounding was fairly even, with the Orangewomen edging out Georgetown 31-29.

Last night Georgetown traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers. Horvath scored a career high 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting, leading the Hoyas. Duany knocked in 12 points and senior point guard Leslie Walker added a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

After falling behind 34-31 early in the second half, the Hoyas went on a 25-9 run leaving the stunned Panthers in their wake. From this point forward, the Panthers never closed the gap to less than nine.

For the game, Georgetown shot 46 percent compared to the Panthers 35 percent. In addition, the Hoyas outrebounded Pittsburgh 52-31, 23 of which were offensive boards.

The Hoyas are currently 2-5 in the Big East and 10-8 overall.

Next up for the Hoyas is a home game against the St. John’s Red Storm on Saturday. The Red Storm are coming off a 69-50 loss to Virginia Tech. Their record stands at 15-4 and they will take on Miami tonight before traveling to Washington, D.C.
