Deadline for GLBT center response missed

The deadline that Vice President of Student Affairs Juan Gonzalez set earlier this year to provide his written response to students supporting a resource center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students has passed, say supporters of the center.

Gonzalez has twice proposed a date to provide the response. The second deadline?which he set in November?was Jan. 25. Gonzalez is reported to have been in California last week.

“Since he set that date in November, we didn’t think it was unreasonable to expect that he could have completed it before leaving [for California],” resource center supporter Anthony House (CAS ‘03) said.

Carolyn Hurwitz, coordinator of Health Education Services, said, “There’s a lot of eyes looking at it. They just want to give it very careful consideration. I really feel that Dr. Gonzalez thinks these are valid concerns.”

Due to the lack of response from Gonzalez, resource center supporters have organized a telephone campaign to promote the issue.

“We began on Monday by asking supporters to call Dr. Gonzalez’ assistant and inquire whether the response was ready to be picked up,” House said.

House added that organizers plan to ask supporters to contact a new University office each day that passes without Gonzalez’s response being received. He said that the University president’s office and the Office of Communications are next on the list to be contacted.

Resource center supporter and Voice staff member Joe McFadden (CAS ‘02) was optimistic about the telephone campaign.

“My impression is that a lot of people have called,” he said.

Gonzalez’s office could not be reached for comment by press time.
