Women’s Lacrosse (8-0, 3-0 Big East)

The No. 1 Hoyas’ women’s lacrosse team continued to dominate this week, adding two victories to their perfect record. Last night at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md., Georgetown got its first-ever win over Maryland in 12 meetings between the two teams. Senior All-American attack Erin Elbe led all scorers with four goals in the 10-6 victory, and junior attacker Sheehan Stanwick added a hat trick and an assist.

The No. 7 Terps got on the board first, however, and the game see-sawed throughout the first half. Maryland’s senior attack Courtney Hobbs scored a goal with seven seconds remaining, and the Hoyas went into the intermission with a slim 5-4 lead.

In the second half, Maryland tied up the game at 5-5 on another Hobbs goal, but the Hoyas answered with a three-goal run behind the hard-charging Elbe, who scored twice and assisted on a goal by Stanwick. The Hoyas dominated defensively in the final 12 minutes, limiting the Terps to just three shots. Sophomore midfield Gloria Lozano also added a goal to round out the evening.

On March 30, junior attack Tracy Weickel led the Hoyas to a 17-9 Big East victory over Rutgers at Kehoe Field. Weickel had a game-high four goals against the Scarlet Knights, while Elbe and Stanwick added three and two goals, respectively. Georgetown displayed the remarkable balance and depth that has led the team to its No. 1 national ranking, with 11 players scoring overall. Rutgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game, but by halftime the Hoyas were up 9-4 and never looked back. Georgetown outshot Rutgers 39-18 and held a 15-5 advantage in caused turnovers in the contest.

Baseball (7-27, 2-8 Big East)

Georgetown suffered its seventh consecutive loss on April 2, falling to Catholic University 8-3. The Hoyas were hampered by a weak offensive effort, with only three runs on seven hits, and another short outing from their starting pitcher. Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the third behind a double from junior outfielder Robert O’Hare, who returned from injury to make his first start since March 2. The lead was short-lived, as Catholic racked up five runs over the next two innings on six hits and a Hoya error. Though the teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh, Georgetown was unable to catch up. First-year Patrick Harrigan (2-2) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out two.

On March 30, the Hoyas lost both games of a doubleheader at home to Big East foe Notre Dame 10-6 and 12-3.

In the first game, the Hoyas fell behind early after the Irish scored five runs in the first inning off losing sophomore pitcher Kevin Field. After being down 8-2 in the sixth, the Hoyas attempted a furious comeback on the strength of sophomore catcher Mike Lombardi’s RBI single. However, the Irish padded their lead in the seventh and held on to win.

In the second, Georgetown again let in five runs in the top of the first and eventually the Irish jumped out to an 11-0 advantage. Sophomore starting pitcher Tom O’Connor took the loss.

The Hoyas return to action this weekend in a three-game conference set against Rutgers.
