byUniversity Information Services has upgraded technology through the purchase and installation of new computers and wireless networking at various locations around campus.

Sellinger Lounge, the public areas of ICC, Lauinger library, St. Mary’s and Dahlgren library are now equipped with wireless networks accessible through an ethernet card.

The University’s overall Internet access has also been improved, due to the installation of a second line onto campus.

“The redundant connection provides a 20-fold increase in bandwidth and also safeguards against outages like the one experienced in February 2002,” said Beth Ann Bergsmark, the director of Academic and Information Technology Services.

Five iMacs are now available for student use in Sellinger Lounge, an idea proposed by Georgetown University Student Association President Kaydee Bridges (SFS ‘03).

New iMacs have also been installed on the first and second floors of ICC.

According to Bergsmark, the improvements are necessary and have been planned for several years.

“Technology is so integral to everything you do,” Bergsmark said.

The recently renovated St. Mary’s Hall now houses the UIS facilities as well as seven classrooms and a 24-hour computer lab.

All the classrooms in St. Mary’s will feature podiums with computers already installed and other built-in technology.

Training labs previously located in Darnall and Reiss have been moved to the third floor of St. Mary’s. Training for programs as basic as Microsoft Office is free and available to all students.

The relocation of all of UIS’s services to St. Mary’s Hall will simplify interaction between UIS and students, Bergsmark said.
