Football (2-4 overall, 0-3 Patriot League)?Georgetown football pulled off its second win of the season last Saturday, edging Davidson College 25-21 at Davidson, N.C. The Hoyas came back from an eight-point third quarter deficit to snap a two-game losing streak.

“This was a huge win for us,” said Head Coach Bob Benson. “When you’re 1-4 in October, you have to get the season under control and we started this weekend.”

Senior quarterback David Paulus performed well in his first start of the year, throwing for three touchdowns and 237 yards while going 15 of 20 passing. Junior receiver Luke McArdle, who is currently leading the Hoyas with 20 receptions and 407 yards, caught a 32-yard pass from Paulus for Georgetown’s first score.

According to Benson, Paulus will start the Hoyas’ next game but his status for the rest of the season is uncertain due to injury.

The Hoyas will return to Patriot League action this Saturday at Lafayette College (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m.

“We have to the stop the run against Lafayette,” said Benson. “They’re a beatable team and we just need to play hard.”

Field Hockey (7-5-0)?The Georgetown Field Hockey team earned its seventh win of the season, beating Virginia Commonwealth University 1-0 on Saturday at Richmond, Va. Neither team scored during regulation nor the two overtime sessions, setting up penalty shots to determine the game.

“We had good defense against VCU, which provided opportunities on offense for us,” said Head Coach Laurie Carroll. “We failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities early.”

The Hoyas made their first three penalty shots but missed their last two. Senior goalie Jessica Herring stopped the Rams, making two crucial saves on penalty kicks by VCU. Herring finished with nine saves.

On Tuesday, the Hoyas downed American University 2-1 at Kehoe Field. First-year forward Jessica Quinn snapped a two-game scoreless streak by scoring late in the first half. The defense held AU to one point despite American’s eight penalty corners.

“We were inspired by the defense of [sophomore midfielder Nora] Mirando,” said Carroll. “She played great defense.”

The Hoyas will travel to Philadelphia to play Temple University on Friday and will host Holy Cross on Oct. 20.

“They are both hot teams, but we’re playing well,” said Carroll. “We just need to keep playing good defense.”

Women’s Volleyball (13-8 overall, 4-2 Big East)? The women’s volleyball team was shut out by the University of Notre Dame 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-21) on Saturday at McDonough Gymnasium. Despite senior outside hitter Lauren Warner’s 11 kills, four digs and three blocks, the Hoyas still could not overcome conference leader Notre Dame.

Warner is leading the Hoyas in kills with 346 and digs with 118. Sophomore middle blocker Sara Albert also had a solid game adding six blocks bringing her season block total to 108. Still, Notre Dame held Georgetown to just a .078 hitting percentage.

The Hoyas toppled Syracuse University 3-1 on Sunday at McDonough. After the tough loss to Notre Dame, the Hoyas rebounded with a good performance over Syracuse, with Warner posting 22 kills and 15 digs. Warner has 13 double-doubles for the season. Albert added 14 kills and 10 blocks.

The Hoyas will play American University at McDonough on Oct. 22 and then travel to St. John’s (N.Y.) for a match on Oct. 25.

Men’s Soccer (5-7-0 overall, 3-3-0 Big East)? The men’s soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Villanova University at North Kehoe Field on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Trevor Goodrich matched Big East and Georgetown record for assists in a game with four. First-year forward Kemmons Feldman scored the Hoyas’ first goal 1:32 into the first half. Feldman and fellow first-year forward Benjamin Jefferson-Dow are leading the team in goals with four.

The Georgetown defense played a solid game holding off the Villanova until late in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Tim Hogan had a busy game, notching eight saves and nearly securing a shutout.

The Hoyas game against West Virginia yesterday was cancelled due to inclement weather and has not yet been rescheduled. Georgetown will have one more Big East contest. Their next game is at Virginia Tech on Oct. 20.
