Letter to the Editor

In a recent article on protests over Iraq, it was mentioned that College Republicans were hanging up “pro-war” posters in response to anti-war demonstrators. This characterization is indicative of the kind of malicious stereotypes that pass for the truth about about conservatives at Georgetown.

The idea that the College Republicans and campus conservatives, or even President Bush himself, are simply sitting around salivating for war is ridiculous. It should go without saying that no one on either side of the political spectrum is actually rooting for the need to send American servicemen into combat. Instead, our message is this: If we pursue a policy of peace at any cost, that cost will be paid in the manner of Sept. 11, only on a larger scale.

If we are at all “pro-war,” it is only in the sense that we realize that the current crisis over Iraq may sadly require armed conflict to remove the threat of Saddam Hussein. History has taught us that current policies such as weapons inspections provide nothing more than a false sense of security, if even that. Nevertheless, like all others, we remain hopeful that there is a peaceful and final solution to be found. To insinuate otherwise is nothing more than an insulting lie.
