John Sullivan, the panhandler often seen outside of Wisemiller’s Deli, was arrested Saturday, Feb. 1 by undercover policemen.

According to Metropolitan Police Department Lieutenant Brian Bray, Sullivan was arrested on a bench warrant issued by a D.C. judge after he failed to appear in court on a drug posession charge. A bench warrant is issued when a perpetrator fails to appear in court for an initial offense.

Although there is some chance he will be released on bond before the court date, Bray said that most judges keep the offenders in jail.

Bray said that Sullivan will most likely be in jail until his court date, which is set for April 23.

Sullivan, a figure popularly known as “the Wisey’s guy,” was always respectful to students, according to Marshall Spooner (CAS ‘03).

“He’s always very friendly outside,” he said. “The drug thing is very surprising.”
