Baseball (1-2, 0-0 Big East)—As if having their home field turned into a parking lot and finishing last year with a 9-47 record wasn’t enough, Georgetown baseball has started off this season playing only three of their scheduled 14 games to date due to inclement weather. The season began in early February with a split double-header against the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Georgetown lost the first game 13-15, with sophomore right fielder Billy Quinn’s four runs leading the Hoyas. Georgetown won the second game 18-17, with ten players scoring runs. Sophomore catcher Andrew Cleary and junior designated hitter Michael Lombardi each scored three runs to lead Georgetown. First year pitcher Warren Sizemore was credited with the win. The Hoyas batted .425 as a team for the series.

The Hoyas played against Lehigh on Feb. 22, losing the first of a three game series 2-9 before the series was rained out. Junior shortstop Parker Brooks and senior designated hitter Robert O’Hare scored Georgetown’s only runs, and junior pitcher Kevin Field earned his first loss of the season.

The team has not played any scheduled games on its home field, Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md., due to field conditions, and yesterday’s game against University of Maryland-Baltimore County was also cancelled because of conditions in Baltimore.

Despite all this, the Hoyas currently lead the Big East in batting average, and Lombardi leads the conference in doubles and runs scored per game. Big East action will begin for the Hoyas on March 15 when the team hosts Boston College at home in Bethesda.

In the meantime, the team will travel to Orlando, Fla. today and is scheduled to play seven games against Rollins College, Evansville and Toledo. With the luck its had so far, the team should just hope no hurricanes hit Orlando.

Women’s Lacrosse(2-0, 1-0 Big East)—The No. 3 women’s lacrosse team chalked up their second victory of the season on the road against William and Mary yesterday. The Hoyas staved off a late three-goal rally by the Tribe to win the contest 15-13. Senior attack Wick Stanwick led all scorers with four goals. Senior attack Tracy Weickel added three goals and an assist. The Hoyas outshot the Tribe 32-22 in the game.

Junior midfielders Michi Ellers and Gloria Lozano, along with Stanwick, were nominated for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy yesterday. Only 18 other women in the nation were nominatedfor the award, the highest symbol of excellence in lacrosse.

Swimming and Diving—Georgetown sent 19 competitors to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Pittsburgh last weekend, where they placed 16th out of 30 teams on the men’s side and 22nd out of 30 on the women’s side. Georgetown’s best finishes came from senior Brian Evangelista, who finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, and Colleen Newman and Jon Hayden, who both placed 13th in the 1650-yard freestyle events. Junior diver Julianna Bonilla posted a seventh place finish in three-meter diving and will compete in the NCAA Division I pre-qualification meet next week.

More impressively, both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were named Academic All-American for fall 2002 by the College Swim Coaches Association of America yesterday. The men’s team had a cumulative GPA of 3.205 and the women posted a 3.339.

Women’s Basketball (15-12, 6-10 Big East)—The story of the season continued for the Georgetown women on Tuesday night, as the Hoyas lost a heartbreaker to Big East foe Miami, 73-71, despite a strong effort by junior forward Rebekkah Brunson. Brunson recorded her 16th double-double of the season, scoring 24 points and posting 12 boards. Miami’s defense won the game, forcing 19 turnovers and leaving the Hoyas with a loss despite double-digit scoring efforts from senior forward Zsuzsanna Horvath and sophomore guard Mary Lisicky.

The Hoyas have earned the ninth seed in the Big East Tournament, and will play eighth seed Seton Hall at Rutgers on March 8 for a chance to keep the season alive. Georgetown’s conference record this season is 6-10; Seton Hall’s is 7-9. The winner of the game will play the first seed, No. 1 Connecticut, currently on a 68-game winning streak. The Huskies blew out the Hoyas by 40 points last week. Better luck next time.
