The first weekend of action is over for the Georgetown women’s field hockey team, and despite splitting a two-game series versus Longwood University and St. Joseph’s, the Hoyas showed enough offensive firepower to give them plenty of optimism for the rest of the season.
The Hoyas opened the 2003 campaign with a 5-0 dismantling of Longwood. Led by sophomore Jessica Quinn’s hat trick and a shutout from first-year goalie Abby Winer in her first collegiate contest, the Hoyas dominated from the beginning.
Quinn notched all three of her goals in the first half, two of them unassisted. Sophomore Erica Chan and Senior Leeanne Rizzo added two more tallies in the second to clamp the door on the Lancers. Hoyas Head Coach Laurie Carroll was impressed by the offensive showing. “We didn’t score many goals last year, and the goals scored against Longwood were world class,” she said. “They were beautiful.”
Despite the offensive blowout, Coach Carroll was not happy with the 10 shots given up by the Hoyas defense in the first half. Chalking it up to “first game jitters,” the defense responded by locking down, not allowing a shot in the second half. Winer, securing a shutout in her first game, earned something more important as well.
“She really stepped up,” Carroll said of her first-year goalie. “She gained the confidence of her teammates”
On Sunday, the Hoyas experienced a letdown, losing 3-2 to the St. Joseph’s Hawks. Although the Hoyas had the early lead on a goal by senior Dionna Jordan, and with a second half equalizer by Quinn knotting the score, St Joseph’s Ketlyn O’Brien scored on a one-timer with less than two minutes left in regulation, stealing a victory for the Hawks.
In spite of the loss, Quinn is undaunted. “All in all we had a pretty good weekend,” she said. “After a loss like this we have to start from the beginning, but I’m excited for
Cornell.” Cornell is the Hoyas next opponent, and with Quinn on top of her game the Big Red field hockey team better be ready.
The Hoyas are at Cornell on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. The next home game is scheduled for noon on Monday, Sept. 15, against Pacific at Kehoe Field.
