Coming off the D.C. College Cup tournament win Labor Day weekend, the Georgetown men’s soccer team posted a disappointing follow-up, tying Indiana University and losing to Boston University in the UC/Adidas classic Friday and Saturday in Storrs, Conn.

In the first game against No. 5 Indiana University on Friday, the Hoyas played to their second straight double overtime game and second consecutive tie. The Hoosiers held a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation, when the Hoyas went on a scoring tear to even the match.

“We chose to go to this tournament because it was an opportunity to play Indiana, a Top 10 team,” said Head Coach Keith Tabatznik. “They have been national champions and we want to play as tough a schedule as possible. We were really excited.”

Indiana scored early in the first five minutes of the game with a Hoosier forward beating senior goalkeeper Tim Hogan. Indiana didn’t score again until the 66th minute when a redshirt first-year scored off a dramatic play. The ball went into the net after being deflected by Hogan and bounced off a Hoyas defender into the net.

First-year forward Ricky Schramm posted his fifth goal of the season in the 86th minute, reducing the Hoosiers lead to one. Schramm handed the Indiana defense its first goal of the season. He scored again in the 89th minute, netting a goal off an assist from first-year forward Daniel Grasso.

The Hoyas held off the Indiana attack in both overtime periods to retain the score at 2-2, posting their second consecutive double overtime tie.

“We had a lot of spent energy in the end of regulation when we went on the drive,” said Tabatznik. “In the second overtime, we were battling and unfortunately didn’t score a goal to win the game, but it was a great result.”

Georgetown faced Boston University in the team’s final game of the tournament. The Terriers got on the board first, scoring two minutes into the game. The Hoyas responded in the 42nd minute with sophomore midfielder Dan Pydo scoring his first goal of the season. Georgetown held off the Terrier attack for the first overtime period, but failed to keep them from scoring the in the second. Boston University netted the game winner off a corner kick two minutes into double overtime.

“Against Boston University, we were in an emotional letdown, coming off a high from the game against Indiana,” said Tabatznik. “We played a good game; we just came out a bit flat, but we still could have won that game.”

The Hoyas face the St. John’s Red Storm on Saturday in Jamaica, N.Y. The Hoyas deadlocked the Red Storm 0-0 in their last competition last season. The Red Storm roster currently consists of the Big East Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Big East Defensive Player of the Week, Chris Wingert. St John’s is coming off two losses and a shutout of Notre Dame.

“Playing [at St. John’s] is a challenge, it’s one of the hardest places to play,” said Tabatznik. “We want to make the rivalry stronger and we’re just going to try to smooth out a couple things from this weekend.”
