The Sports Sermon

October 30, 2003

“Right now I can’t do it. I honestly can’t do it.” – Atlanta Falcons quarterback Mike Vick

Eagles and Giants fans, let out a big breathe of fresh air. Mike Vick won’t be returning till at least December. Your match-ups with the Falcons over the next two weeks looks safe.

But Atlanta Head Coach Dan Reeves seems to think that Vick should be playing in these games. Vick was scheduled to be out six to eight weeks, and this weekend makes it 10 since Vick broke his leg in pre-season action.

Does anyone else see what the Sermon is seeing? It’s a conspiracy: Vick and Falcons owner Arthur Blank see the 1-6 record. Nine more losses and the Falcons will secure the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. Who will they draft? Mike’s little brother, Marcus Vick, a right-handed gunslinging quarterback out of Virginia Tech. The aging Dan Reeves will be shown the door and the head coach of the high-scoring University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, June Jones, will rejoin the Falcons to take football to the next level.

Just imagine with us for a minute: The Atlanta Falcons in shotgun formation, Mike Vick to the left, Marcus Vick to the right, Warrick Dunn, Peerless Price and T.J. Duckett set in trips formation at the line. The ball is hiked to Mike Vick, who quickly dashes to his left with four defenders at his heels. He stops on a dime, turns and throws behind him to Marcus Vick, who scrambles to his right, pauses, then throws a 40-yard strike down the sideline to a streaking Mike Vick.

It’s not that far-fetched, is it? We see more and more every day in the NFL that every team needs a playmaker to win. It’s Dante Hall in Kansas City, Jeremy Shockey in New York, and Randy Moss in Minnesota. What if a team started two playmakers at quarterback? No quarterback by committee here; we are talking about starting two of the most athletic quarterbacks in the world at the same time, on the same team. Mark our words, football will never be the same.
