Saddened by unresponsiveness
As a cosignatory of the original petition that prompted the Senate’s resolution rejecting Cardinal Arinze’s Commencement comments, I am saddened by the University administration’s unresponsiveness to the Senate’s concerns, as reported in your article of October 30. Instead of issuing generic assertions about Georgetown’s commitment to diversity, the administration needs to make a clear statement to the effect that gay faculty, staff, and students form an integral and welcome part of the Georgetown community and are to be treated on an equal basis with all other members of the community. Homosexuals, after all, were specifically attacked in Cardinal Arinze’s speech, hence they need to be specifically reassured of the administration’s attitude toward them.
