The Sports Sermon

November 20, 2003

“You can say Donovan is back, but he was always there.” – Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell

On third-and-one with six minutes left in the first half, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb threw a bomb down the sideline to a streaking James Thrash. While the pass was bobbled by Thrash and fell incomplete, it would be McNabb’s last incompletion of the day. Against their archrivals, the New York Giants, the much hated-on Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles showed the sports world that they are back as the best team in the NFC.

What’s Rush Limbaugh have to say about that? After a month-long hiatus, the Sermon is back on Philly’s bandwagon. Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl, guaranteed.

Who’s gonna beat the Birds to the big dance? Dallas, Seattle and Carolina haven’t smelled the playoffs in so long, that if/when they get there they’ll be one and done. As long as Marshall, Marshall, Marshall is playing in the Rams backfield they are playing at a severe old-man disadvantage. Although benching Keyshawn was a great move, the Bucs defense isn’t scaring teams like it used to, and they’re going down faster than Jeff Garcia in San Francisco.

Now by no means are we at the Serm saying that the Eagles are Super Bowl worthy. Just like in the NBA, the best teams in the NFL reside in the west, and the Colts and Chiefs should rightfully fight it out for the Lombardi Trophy. Watch out for those Bengals, though. Carson Palmer hasn’t played yet, Corey Dillon’s getting traded for some draft picks, and their wide-receiving corps is nasty. Cincinnati in 2005, because nothing beats the “Rudi, Rudi, Rudi,” chant.

Are you upset that we forgot about your team? Please don’t pull a William Green on us, we’ll make it up to you, we promise. Give that man a joint …
