The Sports Sermon

September 9, 2004

“The two have already discussed ways to celebrate touchdowns, but those plans remain under wraps for now. ‘We have a list.’”- Sports Illustrated quoting Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donnovan McNabb on his relationship with wideout Terrell Owens

We here at the Serm were sad to see Tiger lose his spot atop the PGA’s rankings, and even sadder to learn the new number one is Vijay “goodnight” Singh. The Serm has several possible explanations for Tiger’s demise that range from a falling out with swing coach Butch Harmon to a set of sub-standard Nike clubs. However, there is an obvious choice: He got engaged. Tiger proposed to his Swedish supermodel girlfriend not long ago, just about the same time he umm… stopped winning. We here at the Serm have seen this scenario play itself out before, and it’s become about as clich?d in sports as dumping the Gatorade bucket on winning coaches. Take Andre Agassi, a player with perhaps the most talent of any athlete to ever compete in tennis. After winning the US Open and climbing the ladder to number one, his quest for complete dominance, or at least shared with Pete Sampras, was assured for the next decade. But then something happened, yes, Brooke Shields. Suddenly Susan? No, try suddenly married and dropping off the face of the tennis planet.

Lets’ face it, Tiger is never going to be the same. His time practicing at the range will be replaced by time spent with the Mrs. As for his desire to win gold tournaments? The only thing he’ll desire is returning home on time. How will he compete with Vijay, who spends his life on the range. Some of you golf enthusiasts may ask, but how about Vijay, doesn’t he have a family? Yes, but he’s been married for years, everyone knows how that gets, and most importantly, not to a Swedish supermodel.
