With the fall sports season coming to a close and the winter season approaching its going to be a busy few weeks in Georgetown sports.
New women’s basketball Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy began her career on a good note as the Hoyas edged over the Netherlands national team this Monday 67-66. With All Big East performer Rebekkah Brunson graduated and playing in the WNBA, senior guard Mary Lisicky embraced her new role as the team’s primary scorer with a team-high 24 points. Lisicky’s shooting clinic included an impressive 6-10 from the arc, and the game winning 10-foot jump shot off a pass from senior Varda Tamoulianis. The team’s next and final exhibition game will be next Monday against the Russian Federation team UMMC-Ekaterinburg.
Coming off a four-game losing skid, the Georgetown women’s volleyball team (17-12 overall, 2-6 BE) put together two back-to-back victories against St. Johns and St. Peters. The Hoyas were down 2-1 against Big East opponent St. Johns, but were able to muster up three straight wins. Georgetown then beat St. Peters the following week 3-1. The Hoyas were led by the strong game play of senior middle blocker Sara Albert. They also received key contributions from first-year players such as outside hitter Patty Carroll, who recorded a team-best 15 kills, setter Kate Fisher who had 44 assists and 15 digs and junior middle blocker Annie Connor who had six blocks and four aces on the day. Georgetown now faces Big East opponents Rutgers on Nov. 12 and Seton Hall two days later in its final back-to-back home games of the year before the start of the Big East tournament.
With the men’s soccer team competing for the Big East Championship, the Georgetown women’s team (9-9-1 overall, 5-5-1 BE) hoped to follow suit. However the team was defeated 1-0 by Boston College on Sunday in the first round of the Big East Tournament. Boston College first-year forward Kia McNeill found the net in the 72nd minute from the edge of the penalty area. While the Hoyas finished eighth in the Big East standings they will return eight players next season.
One bright spot for the Hoyas was the naming of Nicole DePalma to the All Big East Second Team. The senior captain was an influential player in midfield, scoring nine goals and assisting four times. Junior midfielder Shara McNeill was named to the All Big East Third Team after leading the Hoyas with seven assists.
