On Wednesday, the Georgetown women’s basketball team dropped to 2-3 in the Big East (6-10 overall) after losing 71-52 to the host Villanova Wildcats. The Hoyas were led, as usual, by senior forward Varda Tamoulianis who registered 27 points on 9-of-16 from the field. She also grabbed 11 boards for the double-double.
In action on Sunday, the women improved to 1-3 in the Big East (6-9 overall) defeating the St. John’s Red Storm 85-73 at McDonough Gymnasium. The Hoyas snapped a four-game losing streak and won their first Big East game this season behind career highs from first-year guard Kristin Heidloff, who scored 23 points and dished out eight assists. Junior guard Bethany LeSueur finished with 20 points. Heidloff was also 6-9 from the field and 4-7 from behind the three-point line.
The Hoyas took the lead early, putting the first eight points on the scoreboard. Towards the end of the first period, Georgetown led by as much as 14 points, but St. John’s cut the lead to six as the Hoyas entered the locker room with a 39-33 advantage.
In the beginning of the second half, the St. John’s defense showed signs of revitalization as they gave Georgetown fits for the first few minutes. The Hoyas settled down and proceeded to run their lead as high as 18 points. St. John’s made a run late in the second half preventing the Hoyas from scoring after the 4:45 mark. Free throws kept the Hoyas lead safe as Georgetown outscored the Red Storm 46-40 in the second half, securing their first win in the Big East this season.
The Hoyas shot a 50 percent clip throughout the game and held St. Johns to only 33 percent in the second half. Georgetown took advantage of St. Johns’ 23 turnovers, converting them into 26 points. The Red Storm somehow finished with 37 total boards, edging the Hoyas on both the offensive and defensive glass. Tamoulianis led the Georgetown women with eight boards and first-year forward Kieraah Marlow pulled down six rebounds.
Georgetown also counted on double digit performances from sophomore guard Kate Carlin, who had 15 points and senior forward Varda Tamoulianis who finished with 10. Senior guard Mary Lisicky climbed into fourth place on GU’s all-time assists list with four in the game, giving her 378 in her four seasons with the Hoyas
