Men’s Lacrosse
The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team defeated Syracuse 10-7 Saturday, a feat they haven’t accomplished since 1999. Junior midfielder Pete Cannon opened the scoring seven minutes into the game. Syracuse answered with two quick goals of their own, and the first quarter ended with Georgetown trailing the defending national champs 3-2.
The Hoyas scored first in the second period off senior defensemen Brodie Merrill’s breakaway goal. Sophomore attacker Trevor Casey added to that total five minutes later with his first of three that day. With a minute left in the period, first-year attacker Matt McBride capped the rally with a score of his own. In all, the Hoyas finished the second quarter with three goals while shutting out the Orange the entire quarter, thanks in part to excellent goaltending by senior goalie Rich D’Andrea, who recorded 10 saves total.
Georgetown entered the half leading 5-3. The Hoyas were in a similar situation the last four times these teams met in the past but could never hold on to their lead. It looked as if this game would be no different when Syracuse hacked the Hoya lead to one on a goal by Syracuse junior attacker Greg Rommel three minutes into the third. Georgetown reclaimed their two-goal lead moments later with a Casey score assisted by junior attacker Sean Denihan.
With three minutes left in the quarter, Syracuse’s leading scorer Brian Crocket tied the game with back-to-back goals. Georgetown used a timeout with 10 seconds left in the quarter to call a play that would lead to a Denihan goal with two seconds left to give the Hoyas a 7-6 advantage. From there the Hoyas unloaded on Syracuse with three goals. The Hoyas travel to Hobart for their next game this Saturday, at 1:00 p.m.
Women’s Lacrosse
The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team trounced Syracuse this past Saturday in their Big East opener, beating the Orange by more goals than they scored for a final total of 13-6. Sophomore attacker Coco Stanwick led all scorers with six goals while also assisting on three.
Georgetown found themselves down 2-1 early in the game, as a tough Syracuse defense shut the Hoyas out for a solid 10 minutes before junior midfielder Paige Andrews tied up the game with a goal. Stanwick added two more to put the Hoyas ahead 4-2.
The lead grew from two to six as Georgetown scored four straight, making it 8-2. The Orange tallied another score but a goal by senior midfielder Allison Chambers following two consecutive scores by Stanwick ensured that a Syracuse comeback was all but impossible.
Senior attacker Catherine Elbe led Georgetown in assists with four, while Chambers and senior attacker Hollis Pica had two goals apiece. Stanwick’s six-goal performance earned her Big East Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
“[Stanwick] is an excellent finisher,” Head Coach Ricky Field said. “She puts herself in good postion to score.”
The Hoyas’ next home game will be against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday at North Kehoe Field.
