The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team extended their winning streak to three games with a 14-10 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday. Senior attackman Brice Queener tallied four goals to help pace the Hoyas, whose record now stands at 7-2.
The Hoyas jumped all over the Mount from the start, courtesy of goals from Queener, senior attackman Mike Boynton, sophomore attackman Trevor Casey and senior midfielder Nick Miaritis. The Mount struck back to cut the Hoya lead to 4-1, but Queener and junior midfielder Pete Cannon returned the favor to run the Hoya lead to five.
After a goal in the final minute of the half cut the Hoya lead to 8-5, the Mount attempted to turn the momentum into a comeback with the first goal of the second half to bring the Mount within two. The Hoyas promptly scored four of the game’s next five goals to run their lead to 12-7 and effectively put away the game. First-year goalie Miles Kass made 12 saves in his first collegiate start.
Last weekend, the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team played their second neutral site game of the season in Manhasset, NY against the University of Vermont.
Last year, GU played UVM at a neutral field in New Canaan, CT, a site midway between the two schools. The Hoyas beat the Catamounts 13-5 and this year, performed even better. They came away with a 9-1 victory over Vermont, bringing Georgetown to a record of 6-2 and placing them in the No. 5 position in their division.
Traveling to Long Island was an easy ride for most Hoyas who “came full circle,” as senior Nick Miaritis, a resident of the island, put it. Ten of the 50 Georgetown players hail from New York, four of whom are from Manhasset, including junior Sean Denihan, who graduated from Manhasset High School in 2001. Denihan has racked in the most points for Georgetown this season. His goal in the third quarter put Georgetown at a 6-0 lead.
The game was a record breaker for several Georgetown players. Junior defenseman Reyn Garnett scored his first goal of the season and goalie Rich D’Andrea protected the cage during his time in the net for a complete shut-out, with six saves overall.
With only five games left for the Hoyas, and a record of 2-0 in the ECAC, this could be the season for a position in the much sought-after Final Four. It seems like a long six years since the Hoyas last made it to the Final Four, where they lost to Syracuse in the semifinals.
This weekend, the Hoyas will host one of the few home games of their season against Loyola on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on North Kehoe field.
