Make-up, Headbands and Hair, Oh My!

This season’s style for make-up is what we at the Voice like to call “The Flemish Look.” When aiming for this look, it is important to keep the adjective “subdued” in mind. While heavy black eye make-up and nude lips, or nude eyes and a bright red lipstick were in the past few seasons, make-up application this year is about compromise between the two.

Lay off the black on the eyes, especially if you are a fair-toned person. Instead, use brown or clear mascara with a nude to peach eye shadow for a natural appeal. You may think that such neutral eye make-up on will hardly be noticeable on your face, but that’s the point. With the lips, use a light pink or peach shade, preferably with a matte as opposed to a shimmery finish.

After all, what this make-up wants to get rid of is the glitz and glam of past seasons. One thing that you can overdo, however, is blush. Blush may remind you of your grandmother, and it seems pretty outdated when excessively applied. However, this notion needs to be dropped. Excessive blush, as long as it isn’t fuchsia or from your childhood Wet-n-Wild make-up set, needs to be applied to the maximum.

To compliment the subdued make up shades, go Brooke (Shields) with your brows. Bigger, bushier eyebrows go with the natural appeal of this season’s make up trends.

If you’re looking into getting a new fall haircut, avoid the hipster mullets of days past and keep things clean. But by clean, we don’t mean burnt with a straightening iron. We mean natural in appearance. Embrace your wavy hair without dousing it with gel and other styling products. If its straight, try putting it up in a fun “do” for a change. High or low buns are an easy and attractive way to get your hair out face and can be accompanied by big, thick headbands.
