The Georgetown women’s swimming and diving team continued its impressive winning season, defeating Drexel University handily last Saturday to improve to 7-4. The team has won five straight meets, most recently dominating the Dragons.
One of the clear standouts, Tori Maffey, drew praise from head coach Bethany Bower. “Tori has really come on this year and continues to improve each meet. She is on fire.”
As far as the winning streak is concerned, “It means a lot,” Bower said, emphasizing the need for the right attitude and commitment. “It shows the hard work that they’ve put in.”
Senior tri-captain Corinne Rhodes led the way, winning the 100-yard breaststroke and 50-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle. The strong outing was also highlighted by sophomores Caitlin Colling and Tori Maffey, who both contributed to a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. Colling also won the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard individual medley. Maffey finished first in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke and contributed to the 400-yard freestyle relay win. Sophomores Katie Oldham and Jessica Rettig and freshman Bella Schori finished first, second and third, respectively, in the three-meter diving event.
“Our team has been working hard since the beginning of the season, and now is when all that training starts to pay off,” Maffey said. “Lately, everyone has been stepping up in competition and we have a lot of girls going best times.”
The team is one of two in the Big East without scholarships, and it has not been to the Championships in two years. Bower’s goal for the rest of the season is to get more athletes qualified for the championship meet and to have everyone achieve their one or two best times.
Georgetown will honor 13 seniors for Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. before the season finale against Lafayette. The Hoyas hope for a strong turnout at McCarthy pool to support them as they look to carry their momentum against the Leopards and into the postseason. Commenting on the upcoming meet, Bower said, “It’s going to be a tough meet, but we have a good shot.” After a dominant season, there is no reason to think otherwise.
The Hoyas will return to action on Senior Day, Saturday, Feb. 4 when they host Lafayette at 2 p.m. in McCarthy Pool.
