The sole truth

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. While this may be a universal truth, it is somewhat exclusive to girls and, more specifically, girls who possess diamonds. Therefore, I would like to propose a new universal truth: shoes are mankind’s best friend.

I don’t want to go into the practical advantages of wearing shoes; I think that is rather self-explanatory. Instead I’d like to focus on the much more vital aesthetic and psychological reasons for the importance of this lowly part of one’s wardrobe.

Have you ever walked past a shop window, where you see a shoe so magnificent it makes your heart skip a beat? No? Then you need to keep looking.

Shoes are also important for their psychological impact. Picture this: you return back home having lived off greasy cafeteria food and late-night snacks for entirely too long. You want to look amazing for that important party but your favorite jeans don’t exactly fit anymore. Solution: you put on your most fabulous stilettos, which never tell you that you’ve piled on the pounds and you change. Immediately your legs seem longer, you stand up straighter and you feel fantastic.

This is much easier than spending hours at the gym. In fact, shoes can replace the gym, because every time you walk in high heels you automatically suck in your stomach muscles, thus toning your abs with every step.

What if you are a bloke? Try wearing the wrong shoes if you dare. Everyone knows how important first impressions are, and several surveys by the leading women’s magazines in various countries confirm that the key attributes by which women first judge men are their watch, and more often, their shoes. Feet can tell girls an awful lot. For example, a pair of clean, well-looked-after sneakers means you are a laid-back and caring individual.

The study of shoes may not be a recognized scientific field just yet, but the topic has sparked many great debates: heels v. flats, stilettos v. wedges, lace-ups v. slip-ons. Numerous books have been written on the subject (A Passion for Shoes by Emma Bowd is one of the best). There may never be enough time to argue about Choos v. Manolos, but treat your shoes with love and respect and I promise you will see the changes in your life and soul.
