Women’s stifling defense topples Tribe to celebrate fourth victory

Georgetown’s women’s lacrosse team, ranked sixth in the country, steamrolled the highly regarded William and Mary Tribe (3-2) by a score of 13-3 yesterday afternoon. Led by junior attacker Coco Stanwick who scored three goals, the Hoyas improved their record to 4-0 (1-0 in the Big East) on the season.

Throughout the game the Hoyas proved nothing would stop their well-balanced offense—not even a helicopter landing 20 feet from the field during play. The Hoya attack abused William and Mary goalie Amanda Roth, who stopped only nine of 22 shots on goal. The entire Hoya attack was in on the action, as seven different Hoyas put the ball in the net. Senior midfielder Lucy Poole, junior attacker Sara Zorzi, Sophomore midfielder Zan Morley and senior midfielder Paige Andrews each scored a pair of goals.

When asked about the victory, Stanwick was quick to credit her opponents. “We just played a great team, they were very athletic and really fast,” she said. “We did a good job to keep them to three goals.”

Not to be outdone by the offense, the Hoya defense put on a clinic preventing William and Mary from ever getting into an offensive rhythm. The Hoya defense caused 13 turnovers and allowed just 12 shots on goal. When the Tribe did manage to reach the goal, they entered the domain of dominant Hoya goalie Maggie Koch.

Koch put on an impressive performance throughout the afternoon. Following a particular display of mastery in which she stuffed a Tribe forward who found herself six feet from the net and with an open lane, Koch celebrated with an emphatic raising of the roof.

“Any time I make a save I get excited,” Koch said of the celebration. “Our team really likes to raise the roof.”

This weekend the Hoyas travel south to Durham, N.C. and face the Duke Blue Devils (6-0). With both programs ranked in the top 10 in the country, it should be a formidable match up.

“Duke’s obviously a very talented team; they have the best player in the country returning, Katie Chrest,” Head Coach Ricky Fried said. “If we continue to do the little things well, we should be OK.”
