Fast Break: Hoyas continue hot start

March 30, 2006

Last Saturday, the Georgetown women’s lacrosse team (6-1, 2-0 BE) wasted no time reminding Rutgers who has historically dominated their matchups after jumping out to a 9-1 first half lead. The Hoyas won the match 15-7 and now command the overall series 13-3.

Entering the second half of the game, however, Rutgers didn’t plan on going down easy. The Hoyas’ defensive lapses and unfortunate breaks, six shots off the post on the day, left the door open for a comeback by the Knights.

While the ball never seemed to leave the Hoyas’ possession for the first forty-five minutes of play, the last fifteen minutes were dominated by the Scarlet Knights. Communication breakdowns plagued the defense and allowed Rutgers easy maneuverability. “Today we were on each other a little bit towards the end because they were getting their strong hand and we’re supposed to be forcing weak,” junior goalie Maggie Koch said.

Hoya Head Coach Ricky Fried commended Rutgers’ relentlessness. “They didn’t quit, they kept going hard and we stopped doing the little things that made us successful in the first half.”

The Hoyas were able to hold off the Knights’ late pressure with the leadership of Lucy Poole, who scored two second-half goals. “She’s our go-to-dodger. When we need a goal, we get her the ball,” junior captain Coco Stanwick said.

Georgetown hosts North Carolina tomorrow, looking to win their third straight.
