It’s easy to get stuck in a morning routine: a grab-and-go from Leo’s, coffee from the Corp, and then it’s off to class. If you’re looking to break away from the ordinary, try visiting Baked and Wired, a Georgetown espresso bar and bakery.
The shop has been open for nearly five years, but its location on Thomas Jefferson St. next to the C & O Canal has kept it somewhat hidden from students.
It’s easy to see that owner Teresa Velazquez takes pride in everything she makes. The banana bread is delicious, with chocolate morsels in every bite, and her cupcakes have a well-deserved reputation as being some of the best in city. I recommend the coconut if you’re lucky enough to get one before they sell out.
They don’t have muffins every morning, but on the days they do, nothing complements a cup of their small-estate coffee like a pumpkin cream cheese pecan muffin. Baked and Wired also offers a large selection of loose leaf teas for purchase by the ounce for the hot-pot you are not supposed to have.
Small batches and quality ingredients make the prices a little steep, but one taste of their Jolt Brownie and you know it’s worth every single penny.
The staff is friendly, and the trendy modern feel of the place may make you feel like lingering around, but seating is limited. This may be for the best, however, as you can work off your morning snack with a stroll along the canal. Just don’t forget to take along one a few of their homemade dog biscuits for Jack.
Baked and Wired is located on 1052 Jefferson St. The bakery is open from 7am to 6pm Monday thru Friday.
