The Georgetown women’s tennis team ended a rather disappointing regular season with a 6-1 defeat at Holy Cross. The loss put an embarrassing exclamation point on the Hoyas’ 4-11 overall regular season record.
The Hoyas’ sole win of the match came at the hand of freshman Courtney Olsen.
Playing number three singles, Olsen rallied after dropping the first set of her match to capture a come-from-behind victory with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 11-9. The victory was Olsen’s third consecutive and ninth of the season.
Olsen was the only glimmer of hope for the Hoyas as the remaining five singles players managed to win more than three games in a single set just once against their opponents. In fact, the total games scored in the other five singles matches was 60-14 in favor of Holy Cross.
The Hoyas’ fortune met a similar end in the doubles matches. During the three matches, Georgetown’s women squeaked out just five games while dropping all three matches.
At least the Hoyas can look forward to the Big East Championship, which will be held at the University of South Florida, in the warm sun of Tampa. The women’s team will enter the tournament with a conference record of 1-6 and will most likely not be expected to make a post season run for the conference championship.
“We weren’t that far from winning, despite what the scores say,” said sophomore co-captain Stephanie Cohen said. “We are setting goals for next year and we’re really looking forward to working with our new coach.”
