Women draw twice

August 31, 2006

The Georgetown women’s soccer team (0-1-1) battled through two double overtime ties to open up their 2006 regular season this past weekend at the Navy Tournament in Annapolis, MD. The Hoyas struck early in their first game of the weekend. Senior forward Cristina Araps scored in the 13th minute of the Hoyas’ opener against Binghamton (0-1-1).

The rest of the half turned out less successful for Georgetown as the team entered the half facing a 2-1 deficit. The Hoyas held on strong in the second half, and by out-shooting the Bears 16-5 and not allowing a single corner kick, Georgetown was able to fight back into the game and force a 2-2 tie in two overtimes. Junior forward Elaina Filauro scored the tying goal and junior defenseman Karen Waskewich offered both assists for the Hoyas.

Sophomore defenseman Alex Gargano credited the team’s growing comfort level with each other for getting back into the game during the second half against the Bears. “This weekend was the first time we were back and playing together again,” she said. “We were getting used to playing together and that will continue to get better with time. We played well.”

The Hoyas returned to the field two days later to take on the Davidson Wildcats (0-1-1). The second and final game of the Navy Tournament got off to a similar start and ultimately had the same outcome with a 1-1 draw.

Georgetown got out to another fast start when senior midfielder Chrissy Skogen scored her first goal of the season by heading in a corner kick from junior Karen Waskewich within the five minute mark. Waskewich provided the assists on all three Hoya goals in the tournament. The Hoyas held the lead through the first half and twenty minutes into the second before Davidson tied the game with a strike in the sixty-fourth minute of the game.

Georgetown did not dominate the score sheet against Davidson as they had when facing Binghamton. The Hoyas were out-shot by the Wildcats 16-8, and after not allowing any corner kicks against the Bears, Georgetown surrendered twelve to Davidson.

“I think fatigue played a big part [against Davidson],” Gargano said of the team, which had played a double overtime game just two days before.

The Hoyas will host their home opener this weekend when the D.C. Invitational kicks off tomorrow. Georgetown squares off with George Mason on North Kehoe Field at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. If you miss the Hoyas on Friday, you have another chance to catch them at home this weekend on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they host Duquesne.

“We’re happy to be at home and in front of all our fans,” Gargano said looking forward to the weekend. “We had a good break this weekend and we’re excited to get our first win of the season.”
