Women shutout for fourth straight game

September 28, 2006

Soccer, like many other sports, can be a game of streaks. You win some, you lose some and sometimes these wins and losses come in bunches. The Lady Hoyas soccer team is currently riding a losing streak of four games after a 1-0 loss at Seton Hall this past Sunday. This streak has come at the beginning of the teams’ Big East campaign, and they now find themselves sitting at 0-3 in conference play.

It is easy to fall so quickly in a strong Big East conference, with six teams moving in and out of the national top-20 already this year.

“This is one of the toughest conferences in the country and we have run into some bad luck right in the meat of our schedule,” Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan said.

Sunday’s loss to the Seton Hall Pirates (5-5-0, 1-2 BE) was a hard-fought game from both sides. The only break of the game came in the waning minutes of the first half as freshman Kaitlyn Rogers of Seton Hall capitalized on one of the Pirates’ five corner kicks of the game. Assists went to senior forward Meagan DeWan and senior defender Jen Michewicz on the Seton Hall goal.

The Hoyas fought back hard, but they were unable to overcome the deficit despite out-shooting the Pirates 13-10 in the game. Regardless of his team’s current four game slide, Nolan remains optimistic for the Hoyas’ chances in the future.

“We’ve been competitive if not dominant in all of the losses,” Nolan said. “We haven’t had any lucky breaks or bounces and haven’t been able to find the net, but the girls have played hard in every single game.”

The Hoyas (3-5-3, 0-3-0 BE) couldn’t ask for a better weekend to turn the season back around as they will take on two conference opponents at home on North Kehoe Field. The first of these very important matches will take place on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Providence (3-3-3, 0-3-0 BE), and the second at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday against perennial powerhouse Connecticut (5-5-1, 2-1-0 BE). In order to end their current losing streak, the Lady Hoyas will need some of the lucky breaks Nolan talked about to go along with their consistent hard play to find themselves back in a very competitive position in the Big East.
