The Georgetown women’s soccer team secured its first win in nine attempts against Connecticut this past Sunday. The Hoyas improved to 4-5-4 overall and a Big East record of 1-3-1 with a 2-0 victory over the Huskies who dropped to 5-7-1 on the season with a 2-3-0 Big East record.
Despite being out-shot by the Huskies 11-5 and forfeiting the corner kick advantage 8-1, the Hoyas were able to make their way past UConn by converting on the opportunities they did have. Junior forward Elaina Filauro scored the first-ever game-winning goal against the Huskies within the first ten minutes of the opening half.
A Connecticut foul at midfield led to a Hoya free kick, which junior defenseman Karen Waskewich drilled into the box at the far post. Senior Alexandra Hardy crossed the ball back across the middle, and Filauro stepped in to head the cross past the outstretched Huskie goalie, Stephanie Labbe.
After an uneventful conclusion to the first half, the second half began with the score still 1-0. Twenty minutes into second half play senior midfielder Chrissy Skogen scored the second goal of the game and her fifth of the season. Skogen challenged Labbe one-on-one and scorched the ball to the lower left post.
The Huskies had several close scoring opportunities during the second half but were unable to convert them into goals. Georgetown junior goalkeeper Jade Higgins stopped four Connecticut shots on the day, and the Huskies lofted two golden opportunities over the cross bar during the second half.
This weekend the Hoyas embark on a four-game road trip. The first game is scheduled for tomorrow at 7 p.m. against the Cincinnati Bearcats (5-4-2, 1-2-1 BE).
