The P St. trolley tracks between 35th St. and Wisconsin Avenue will be torn up to facilitate the replacement of water main lines in the neighborhood.

In 2004, the Department of Transportation initated the “Georgetown Project,” suggesting massive renovations concerning gas-line and water line replacement.

According to a Georgetown Project goals list published by DOT, the residents of P street would have to endure six months of drilling and burdensome construction crews should the decision to remove the tracks become final.

P St. resident Catherine Habanananda is vehemently against the proposal. Her husband, Paijit Habanananda, has written letters of protest to the Department of Transportation and was planning to write again.

“We think [the cable line] is a part of the great historic aspect of the city,” she said. “It is very silly to engage in such expenses.”

The P St. cable-car line was added to D.C.’s street-car system in 1890. The system was discontinued in 1962.
