Hoyas drop a heartbreaker

March 1, 2007

Hoya baseball (2-4) was riding a two-game winning streak going into yesterday’s game against Navy (9-2). The team got another very solid pitching performance from Jimmy Saris, but their bats let down the sophomore righty as the Hoyas dropped the close game 2-1.

Saris, who is already beginning to emerge as one of the team’s key players, threw a complete game. He gave up only two runs off of five hits while striking out nine Midshipmen. Opposing teams are now hitting a measley .236 against the young pitcher.

Despite the fantastic pitching performance, the Navy staff held the Georgetown offense to one run on six hits.

Georgetown’s lone run came when sophomore right fielder Sean Baumann and senior third baseman Joseph Graziano executed a double-steal, forcing a poor throw from Navy catcher Steven Soares.

The Hoyas had an opportunity to win the game late, but they left junior first baseman Matt Harrigan stranded on second base in the eighth inning.

Saris was let down by the defense behind him, as Graziano misplayed a ground ball to third base to score the deciding run for Navy.

Georgetown will look to put this loss behind them on Friday, as they travel to Florida to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.
