At some point you have got to ask yourself what’s more important, your stomach or your wallet. If your wallet is filled with your parents’ money, it’s time to check out one of Georgetown’s exotic dining options.
Neyla, an upscale Mediterranean grill, provides a chic atmosphere accompanied by a succulent spread. More importantly, the array of mezze plates, or small Lebanese appetizers similar to tapas, allow those who are money-conscious to still enjoy an evening out. Priced from $6 to $8, sharing three or four with some friends makes for a unique and affordable experience.
Another option is the gigantic Lebanese mezze sampler for two. A large glass tray overflowing with small, delicious portions, it’s the perfect way to try all of the traditional mezzes, including hummus, baba ghanouj and tabbouleh. It will set you back $30. Although I enjoyed all of the Lebanese treats, the stuffed grape leaves, served room temperature, were melt-in- your-mouth delicious. The mixture of rice and spices pack just enough punch, yet do not overwhelm the palate.
Neyla’s homemade pita bread, served piping hot, does not leave anything to be desired. The texture is perfectly fluffed, with just a subtle hint of nutty flavor to complement their creamy dips. Do not hesitate to ask for more pita; the mere piece they provide is not enough to soak up the delicious mezzes. (inspireclion.com) For carnivores, an open wood-burning oven in the rear roasts wonderful kabobs.
The service, although relatively proficient, is a bit abrupt and uppity if you are not a big spender. The tight quarters become slightly crowded as the evening progresses, but Neyla surpasses the mark. So sit back, enjoy the view of the draped tapestries overhead, and try something just a little more interesting than Philly’s.
Neyla is located at the corner of Wisconsin and N St. For reservations call (202) 333-6353.
