Dear Editor,
Your article about Gallaudet University is misleading the public when it says that “Gallaudet University is still suffering from the long-term effects of last fall’s student strike.” (“Gallaudet’s accreditation woes,” 3/1/07)
Actually, the accreditation issues that Gallaudet is facing were caused by the mismanagement of the university by former President I. King Jordan and former Provost Jane Fernandes. A recent letter from the Middle States Association accreditors shows that Jordan failed to properly respond to accreditation issues last year and other issues going back to 2001.
The protesters actually saved the university from continual mismanagement by causing Fernandes’ appointment as president to be rescinded. History will show that the protesters did exactly the right thing in calling for Fernandes’ ouster.
