Lady Hoyas hold off Hopkins

March 15, 2007

The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team continued its winning ways Wednesday afternoon with a 16-13 victory over area rival and 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins. Relying on a trio of senior attackers—Brittany Baschuck, Schuyler Sutton and Coco Stanwick—Georgetown built a 8-4 halftime lead that they never relinquished.

Johns Hopkins came out hot in the second half, scoring four quick goals to nearly even it at 9-8, but Georgetown dominated the middle part of the second period, ultimately putting the game out of reach. After the Blue Jays pulled within a goal, Georgetown took over, scoring six unanswered points.

Relying on their experience and patience on offense, Georgetown proved too tough for Johns Hopkins and continually exploited the middle of the Blue Jay defense. Still, the Blue Jays were a pesky bunch and hung around until the last few seconds with a late second-half run.

Georgetown was efficient on offense, scoring on most of their possessions in Johns Hopkins territory. Bascuck tallied four goals while Stanwick added two and a pair of assists. Sophomore Bunny O’Reilly also had a solid game with four goals.

With four total points, senior Coco Stanwick passed Lauren Hilsky for 4th all time on the career points list.

On the defensive side, Goalkeeper Maggie Koch again looked strong as the Hoya defense faced an aggressive Blue Jay offense that kept the pressure in the Hoya’s zone for almost the entire first half. With the win, Georgetown moves to three and one (1-0 BE). Up next for the Hoyas are the unranked Duke Blue Devils at home on Sunday.
