Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse battled for their third straight road-win Tuesday evening. The 9th-ranked Hoyas (first in BE) defeated the College of William and Mary 13-5, improving their record against the Tribe to 11-1.
“We’re still trying to improve our shooting,” head coach Ricky Fried said. “We’re getting good shots, but our shot percentage isn’t as high as I would like it.”
Junior Zan Morley and sophomore Bunny O’Reilly led the team in scoring with three goals apiece. William and Mary’s Jamie Sellers led her team with three goals as well. On the defensive end, Georgetown saved seven of William and Mary’s 12 shots on the goal, while the Tribe only managed to stop thirteen of Georgetown’s twenty-eight.
“We’ll continue to work on the defense, which has come along nicely of late,” Fried said. “Our ride is forcing turnovers. Maggie Koch is playing well in goal, which gives our defense more and more confidence.”
In the first half, the Hoyas committed six turnovers to the Tribe’s 15. Georgetown took advantage and scored seven of 17 shots in the first period.
“As a team we came out strong, and the defense dictated the tempo, forcing some early William and Mary turnovers,” Fried said after the game. “On the other end, the offense capitalized on William and Mary’s mistakes.”
The Hoyas led the game at halftime 7-2 and sealed the win after the second half. Freshman Molly Ford scored the Hoyas’ final goal with 3:22 left in the game.
This win comes after the team’s co-captains, senior Coco Stanwick and senior goalkeeper Maggie Koch, were named Big East offensive and defensive Players of the Week on Monday. This is the second time this season that the league has granted these two the weekly awards.
The Hoyas (6-2) will travel to Chapel Hill this Friday to take on the Tar Heels of North Carolina.
