Snap crêpes and tea

May 3, 2007

Snap is the French equivalent of your average pizzeria. The setting inside is casual, with a few tables crammed inside a small hole on Jefferson Street. A tired employee quietly takes your order in the corner, and prepares your crêpe on equipment that would satisfy a Parisian street vendor. But don’t be fooled by the paper plate or the plastic knife that cuts through your first bite. The crêpes are delicious, and the bubble tea is a refreshing sidekick.

The only real obstacle in the dining experience is deciding on a topping or flavor of bubble tea. Despite its modest size, Snap offers more options than the average crêpe joint. If you’ve got a pulsing sweet tooth, you can play it safe and go for the Nutella, or brave the less traditional toppings, like rose petal jam or red bean paste. You can even get a cheap but substantial lunch from the Asian-fused savory crêpes, like spicy Thai tuna or chicken satay.

That’s not a pizza, that’s a crêpe smothered in rose petal jam.

After a hot day of shopping on M Street, your best bet is to skip the crêpes and go for a bubble tea. The flavored green teas are lighter than the smoothies, and Snap definitely doesn’t skimp on the Tapioca pearls. For a mildly sweet and fruity treat, try the passion fruit or mango. If you’re craving a caffeine kick, you can opt for a mocha and coffee latte smoothie.

Snap offers smoker-friendly outdoor seating if you don’t want to take your crêpe on the road. Like its interior, the outside is as casual as a backyard barbeque. Though it could stand a little more sun, the narrow, fenced-in exterior provides a quaint reprieve from the bustle of M Street.

Any true crêpe lover knows that the best crêpes come, like the tastiest hot dogs, out of the cart of street vendor and cost about two Euros. Snap sticks to the budget, and while the most elaborate, meat-filled crêpe costs just under eight dollars, most fall between four and five bucks. You can save your money for the high-end shops and savor the Asian persuasion of this hidden gem.

Snap is located at 1062 Thomas Jefferson St. Crêpes start at $4 and bubble teas at $3.95. Snap doesn’t accept cash, so bring your credit card. For more information, call 202-965-SNAP.
